Italy (Telecom Italia Mobile - TIM) Prepaid SIM Instructions
Your Phone Number:
Your Italian cell phone number is located on the back portion of your "TIM Card" where it says, "N. Tel:" (ex. N. Tel:3397732549).

Dialing information
In order to call to your Italy cell phone number from the USA, the correct sequence is 011-39, then the Italy cell phone number including the area code (ex. 011-39-334-5551212). Please be sure to inform anyone who has your Italian cell phone number as to the proper dialing sequence in order to insure you receive your calls.

To call from Italy back to the US, you would dial 001, then the phone number to be dialed including the area code (ex.:001-212-555-1212). Keep this in mind when programming phone numbers into your address book.

Installing the SIM chip:

Be sure that your phone is fully charged.
Snap out the Italy SIM chip from the SIM card/chip holder and insert the chip into your GSM Phone with the metal portion facing down as to make contact with the contact prongs. (You will usually find your phone's SIM tray underneath the battery of your GSM cellphone).
Note: After installing the SIM chip, you'll be able to add numbers to your address book, but you will not be able to make a call until you're in Italy.

Activating Your Service:

Go to Italy
Turn on phone
Place a call in order to activate service

Network Detection:
GSM networks broadcast their presence, so your phone will display the name of a local GSM carrier when turned on. [Note: The Ericsson R520 automatically switches bands by default, so the rest of this section will not apply if you have this phone.] If you get a message to the effect of "No network detected", you probably need to manually set your handset to switch to a foreign GSM band. Most GSM carriers in North America use 1900 MHz, while those in other parts of the world use 900/1800 MHz. To change your GSM band, consult your phone manual under "Network".

Language Selection:
If your GSM phone with TIM Card? displays menus in Italian and you'd like to view them in English, follow these steps: (These instructions are for the Ericsson R520. Other phones should use similar navigation.)

Even if you have zero credit, since incoming calls are always free, you will still be able to receive calls.

Remove the scratch-off surface (usually on the back of the card) in order to expose the 16 digit code

PIN and PUK codes:
The PIN (Personal Identification Number) code prevents unauthorized access to the SIM card in your phone. For your convenience, the PIN check feature has been left OFF by default on your TIM? SIM card. It is very strongly recommended that you leave this feature AS IS! If you enter the PIN code incorrectly 3 times in a row, the SIM card will be blocked. To un-block the SIM card, you will need to enter the PUK (Personal Unlock Key) code. (Again, since the PIN check feature is disabled, this information is only supplied to satisfy all the curious people who want to know, "What's this card with the PIN code?")
